Botswana is a landlocked country in southern Africa, roughly the size of Texas or France, with much of its territory dominated by the Kalahari Desert.

Since gaining independence from Britain in 1966, Botswana transformed from one of poorest nations into an upper-middle-income country, largely due to diamond mining.
